Step Into History: A Rickshaw Tour Through Amsterdam’s Past & the Story of Anne Frank

Amsterdam is a city filled with stories. From its golden age of trade to the struggles of World War II, every canal, bridge, and building has a tale to tell. While walking and biking are popular ways to explore, there’s nothing quite like experiencing the city’s history from the comfort of a private rickshaw. On our historic Amsterdam tour, we take you through the city's most iconic sites, with a special stop at one of the most moving places in the world: The Anne Frank House.

Anne Frank: A Story That Echoes Through Time

Anne Frank was a young Jewish girl whose diary became one of the most powerful records of the Holocaust. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1929, Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution. They lived a happy life until 1940, when the Nazis invaded the Netherlands. By 1942, with deportations of Jews increasing, the Franks went into hiding.

For two years, Anne, her sister Margot, her parents Otto and Edith, and four others—Hermann, Auguste, and Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer—lived in a secret annex hidden behind a bookcase in Otto Frank’s business building at Prinsengracht 263.

Despite the constant fear of discovery, Anne kept a diary, where she shared her thoughts, dreams, and experiences of life in hiding. She wrote about missing the outside world, her hopes of becoming a writer, and the tensions of living in a small, concealed space.

Unfortunately, in August 1944, the annex was discovered, and the occupants were arrested. Anne and Margot were sent to Auschwitz and later to Bergen-Belsen, where they died of typhus in early 1945. Otto Frank, the only survivor, later published Anne’s diary, making her words a symbol of resilience and hope.

Visiting the Anne Frank House by Rickshaw

On our rickshaw city tour, we take you through Amsterdam’s historic Jordaan district, where Anne Frank and her family once walked freely before the war. As we approach the Anne Frank House, you’ll feel the weight of history in the air.

🏡 The Secret Annex – Today, the house has been transformed into a museum, preserving the hidden rooms where Anne and the others lived. The bookcase that concealed the entrance remains one of the most emotional parts of the visit.

📖 Anne’s Diary – Her famous red-checkered diary is on display, along with quotes from her writings that give you a deep insight into her thoughts and emotions.

🕯️ A Story That Lives On – The museum not only tells Anne’s story but also highlights the dangers of discrimination, making it a powerful reminder of history’s lessons.

If you choose to visit the museum after the tour, we can drop you off right at the entrance, allowing you to take your time to explore.
